Abstract
Ethane hydrogenolysis has been an informative
reaction to probe the properties of supported metal catalysts, e.g., see
various papers by Sinfelt and co-workers. We have combined reaction kinetic
studies of ethane hydrogenolysis with microcalorimetric measurements and
quantum chem. calcns. to compare silica-supported Pt and Ni catalysts. The
hydrogenolysis reaction exhibits more pos. ethane orders and less neg.
hydrogen orders over supported Ni compared to Pt, and these reaction orders
are strongly dependent on the reaction temp. and the partial pressures of
reactants. Results of microcalorimetric investigations and quantum chem.
calculations. show similar heats for the adsorption of ethylene, acetylene, and
hydrogen on supported Ni and Pt, whereas C-C bond rupture is more favorable
through an adsorbed C2H4 intermediate on Ni, compared to an adsorbed C2H2
intermediate on Pt.
